At one time was the only large active fireboat in the
Baltimore and Chesapeake Bay area.
Retired and preserved at the Fire Museum of Maryland in Towson, MD.

I have always been interested in fireboats.
Perhaps it is from me growing up in a boat building family
and going on to have a wonderful long fire service career.
Whatever the reason, Fireboats are special machines.

Throughout history, a wonderful variety of powerful firefighting vessels have
protected the waterfronts and battled major fires in many of the larger cities.

Typically each fireboat was designed for the port it served.
In some cases boats were fully staffed and ready to respond at all times.
Others, would only be staffed when needed.
Either way, when fireboats go to work they are a powerful force.

In recent years, particularly since 2001, many of the older fireboats have
been replaced by newer, more powerful, more sophisticated boats that
utilize all the modern technologies available. Some are capable of more
pumping capacity than 2 or 3 previous boats.

With Homeland Security grants, more and more fireboats have been
built for the smaller cities and towns that previously did not have this
resource available to them.

As I have traveled around the country I have attempted to photograph
as many of these old and new firefighting and rescue vessels as I can.
Each has its own unique design, features, and histories which make
this "hobby" as interesting as it is. Documenting these vessels in
photographs has become a passion and I continue to look forward to
whatever comes next.

Toronto, Ontario's fireboats are located on the waterfront of the Inner Harbor,
off Lake Ontario, just a short walk from the Toronto Blue Jays ballpark at
Rogers Centre, under the CN Tower.

Not all fireboats are on salt water. Many are on the larger lakes.
The "Simon Aliotta" is on Lake Norman, in the general Charlotte, NC area.

Many times I will take photos of boats without assistance.
Sometimes I luck out and make a good contact with someone
who truly shows off their boat as the Cornelius-Lemay folks did.

The ongoing search for fireboats has increased in recent years with some trips
specifically designed to locate and photograph a number of boats.
We added a number of boats in from Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina,
Georgia, and Florida in November-December 2015.

The Search Continues
During March - April 2016 our journey brought us down to southern Florida including
fireboats at Miami and Miami-Dade County. Then across the Florida panhandle to see
boats at Panama City, Niceville, Pensacola. Into Alabama we found Orange Beach and
Mobile boats. As we headed back, a stop in Savannah was rewarded by a grand water
display by the Savannah Marine 1.

The Search for Fireboats has brought us to many interesting places.
In Sept-Oct 2023, it brought us to Japan where we found many Fireboats.
This 'selfie' shows the Tokyo Fireboats "Miyakodoi" and "Oedo"
at the Rinko Fire Station in Tokyo Harbor.

Road Trip September 2024
In September 2024, we went on an 18 day trip around the USA
looking for Fireboats, Baseball, and Fun.

Ultimately, covering 19 states, about 48 Fireboats, 4 MLB games,
and lots of fun. A lot of photos of Fireboats added to the feature.

FIREBOAT TRIPS
We have taken a number of trips with the goal of finding Fireboats.
Some of these trips brought us to some special places.

These trips have brought our adventures to places we would
not necessarily go to otherwise.

Road Trip September 2024
A road trip in September 2024 covered much of the north eastern
quarter of the country. We went through 19 states over 18 days.
It wound around the 5 Great Lakes, out to Minnesota,
south to Lake Ozarks in Missouri, back east through Kentucky
and West Virginia, to the Jersey shore, and Long Island.

We photographed about 48 Fireboats and attended 4 MLB Baseball
Games in Detroit, Minneapolis, St Louis, and Cincinnati.

JAPAN FIREBOATS 2023

Japan 2023
The search for fireboats has taken us to many interesting places.
Our focus has previously been on the USA and Canada, but in
September and October 2023 we had the opportunity to visit Japan.
The search for fireboats was very rewarding, photographing about
20 boats in several cities if Japan.

JAPAN FIREBOATS

I would like to say thank you "Arigato!" to all those great firefighters
who took the time to show this crazy American your Fireboats
and apparatus. It was a wonderful, special, once in a lifetime
experience that we will treasure forever!

The guys aboard the "Yokohama"

The first Fireboats I found in Japan was actually a Japan Coast Guard vessel
called the "Hiryu" FL-01. This large Japanese Coast Guard ship is a very
powerful firefighting ship. It is docked in Yokohama.

Tokyo is one of the largest cities in the world with a large port to protect.
There are 3 Fireboat stations in Tokyo. The largest is the Rinko Station
in the Harumi section of Tokyo. The largest boat assigned there is the
43 meter (140+ ft) Fireboat "Miyakodoi" built in 2013.

The second largest boat in the 9 boat Tokyo fleet is the "Oedo"
which is also assigned to the Rinko station.

The second Tokyo Fireboat station is at Takanawa very near the infamous
Rainbow Bridge. Two boats, almost twins, "Ariake" and "Kachidoki"
are assigned here.

The third Tokyo Fireboat station is located up the Sumida River in a section
of Tokyo known as Hamacho. There two boats are the "Hamakaze" and "Kiyosu".
Both with low profiles to get under the many bridges over the river.

On the northern shore of the huge Tokyo Bay is Chiba City.
This was my farthest north fireboat "Matsukazi".
A very large boat and a great group of guys who showed me around.

The "Yokohama" is the largest of the two fireboats at Yokohama.
We got the full tour of the vessel.

Kawasaki City has two Fireboats. The "Kawasaki" is the larger
of the two boats. The "Umikazi" is the smaller boat.
Boat are together in a very industrialized area.

We made it as far south (or west) as Hiroshima.
The main Hiroshima Fireboat is called "Hiroshima".

One of the toughest boats to get to was the "Ichikawa City" Fireboat
which about a mile walk to and from the closest train station
on a 90 degree high humidity day. Worth the walk.

Many of the Fireboat stations are also land based fire stations.
The guys at Chiba explained and demonstrated a number of things
that are different about the smaller Japanese apparatus.

You never know what you might find in the search for Fireboats.
My visit to the Tokyo's Takanawa Station also got me a ride in the bucket
of a Ladder Truck that was drilling at the station. I got a birds eye view
of Tokyo harbor and the fireboats.

This was part of a great multi-state, multiple fireboat tour that took me from
Florida to the Gulf Coast to Texas and then up through the center of
the country thru the Nashville, Louisville, and Cincinnati areas.

Fireboats in Victoria, British Columbia, September 2016

On the Road Again 2016!
We set out across the country in our RV in the Fall of 2016.
The primary mission of the trip was to photograph as many fireboats
as we could find. The trip was extremely successful with over
90 more boats being added to the list!

We found boats in middle America, Western Canada, all the way down
the USA west coast, and on the way back east.

Along the way we met some great people who shared their
special boats with me so that I could share them with you.

The folks at the Portland, OR Airport ARFF department operate this boat on the
Columbia River adjacent to the airport. It is designed primarily to respond to
any aircraft incident in the river. The boats is staffed by personnel at the
Airport station who respond over to the boathouse if needed.

The crew was awesome and took me along for a ride on the Columbia River.
Very cool!

MASSACHUSETTS BOAT YARD FIRE

MATTAPOISETT, MA
The Mattapoisett (Massachusetts) Boat Yard was destroyed by a 5 Alarm+ fire
on August 19, 2022. The fire was fought by 3 fireboats from New Bedford, Dartmouth,
and the Wareham Harbormaster.

New Bedford Fire Department Marine 38 pumped its deckgun during the fire
and also supplied land companies via LDH.

Perhaps none stands out more than "America's Fireboat" the FDNY "Fire Fighter"
The powerful diesel-electric boat battled many of the biggest fires in the
New York City metropolitan area.

The "Fire Fighter" has retired and is currently located at the eastern end of
Long Island at Greenport.

I had the opportunity to go aboard the "Fire Fighter" a few times.
This was me in July 2011 next to one of the big deckguns.
The boat was recently retired at the time and docked at the
FDNY Marine Division Headquarters at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Both the "Bravest" and the "Feehan" as assigned to and operate

Each boat has particular strengths and weaknesses depending
on the type of incident, weather conditions, and location.
The crew takes the appropriate boat based on the conditions.
This also allows for a fast boat to always be in reserve service.

These Safe Boats are often paired with and numbered based on the larger boats.
Marine _ A (Alpha) have firefighting capability, while Marine _ B (Bravo) is an EMS design.
